Feralia.net blog. episode 82: Featured Artist: Afterimages of Ghostfire

Next up is an artist that I’ve been meaning to feature for a long time: Julia Lichty and Afterimages of Ghostfire. I remember meeting Julia for the first time nearly 15 years ago at one of the early Zenkaikon conventions. I was drawn to her style then, so much so that years later I asked Julia to do the cover art for Feralia: Requiem of Mist, which turned out amazing! Julia is a regular at conventions in ths US and if you’ve been to a con in the northeast, you may already be familiar with her work without even realizing it – she’s done program cover and badge art for cons like Otakon and Zenkaikon just to name a couple. Here are a couple examples of her work, including the book cover 🙂

One of the best things about both writing and vending as a small business is the amount of cool and talented people I get to meet at cons. Today I wanted to feature Miniature Inspirations, who makes adorable felt sculptures. I have several of them in my house and I can confirm that they are ridiculously cute.

Miniature Inspirations are fellow Marylanders like myself and are regulars at a bunch of area conventions and festivals. (We’ve spent many a weekend in the same halls over the years!) They hand make a ton of cool stuff, and on top of that they are super nice people!

Supporting artists, writers and small business as conventions cancel

If you’re into anime, gaming or comic cons, you’ve likely heard by now about the massive amount of cancellations that are being forced to happen across the country due to the coronavirus outbreak. While most would agree that it’s in the best interests of everyone’s health, it has made it extremely difficult for the creators and vendors whose biggest source of income is conventions. We’ve been feeling it at Alicia’s Anime, as we’ve had 7 cancellations and one show rescheduled. Personally it’s also rough because cons are a great outlet for my books as well.

So what I’ve decided to do is get back into featuring artists, writers, other creators and small businesses that I’ve been lucky to meet over the nearly 16 years I’ve been doing events. I’ve been meaning to do it regularly for a while now, and this is the perfect opportunity, as many of them are struggling right now.

I’ve already featured a few: PLB Comics, Jason Powell, S.O. Thomas, & C Jakes Draw, but I have many more to add! I’d like to do at least one per day.

Lots of awesome folks to come!

Convention Update

Just a quick update on my con schedule with Alicia’s Anime. Sadly, some of the events we work with have been forced to cancel or postpone due to the coronavirus. We look forward to supporting all of these conventions at their future events and hope that all you out there stay safe and healthy! Check out our Convention Schedule HERE, which we’ll keep up to date. I hope to see you at an event near you soon!

Feralia.net blog. episode 80: Review: X-Men: Phalanx Covenant (Generation X Classic vol 1)

Generation X vol 1
It’s been a while since I posted anything for my X-Men Reading Project since we’ve had a busy convention schedule (before the recent cancellations, that is), so I wanted to take a moment to post the next story: The Phalanx Covenant. The main story itself spans only a few issues, but is collected nicely with a lot of other related issues in Generation X Classic vol 1. (ISBN 978-0785149675) It includes Uncanny X-Men #316-318, X-Men #36-37, Generation X #1-4, Generation X Ashcan Edition, and material from Generation X Collector’s Preview.

This is the first big event that I’m going to list under the reading project as optional with an asterisk. While it’s a nice introduction to the Generation X characters, I felt like there wasn’t much else that was really important. I should mention that the recent major event House of X/Powers of X does make mention of the Phalanx. So, having read this story was nice when I came to that.

As for the story, I couldn’t really get big into it, as it felt like it served more as an introduction than anything else. The collection was printed very nicely, however, with lots of cool extras, and I did really like the art a lot. Most of the main X-Men are barely in the story.

So while felt like it wasn’t a critical read, especially for a big event, it does have its good points. Pick it up if you want to read the intros of the Generation X characters and enjoy some really cool art.

Feralia.net blog. episode 79: Review: Cable: Fathers and Sons

The next step in my X-Men Reading Project is different than those before, as it’s just 3 single issues. No collections this time. The issues are Cable (first series, 1993) #6, 7 & 8.

Like Fatal Attractions, I already had these issues in my collection, so I only had to pull them from a long box to reread. Like most 90’s comics, these issues shouldn’t be hard to find at a very reasonable price from your local comic book shop, or at a convention near you.

The story is short and sweet, and if you have even mildly detailed knowledge of the X-Men, you may already know the important parts of the story that are revealed. As usual I’ll keep things spoiler free for those if you who haven’t already read it, and won’t get into any details of this short but important story. So, since it’s so short, I’ll leave it at that. I did really enjoy reading the story again and breezed through the issues really quick. (It was funny and pretty cool seeing all the ads for Super NES & Genesis games as well.)
As far as catching up on the major X-Men stories, I’d definitely recommend reading these 3 issues if you haven’t yet. If you’ve read it in the past and remember the revelations therein, you could skip it without affecting later stories.

Still, it was another fun, nostalgic one to revisit.
